amglogo.gif AMG REVIEW: A collaboration between R. Stevie Moore and his longtime musical partner Victor Lovera, 1973's Ob Newschk is less a collection of songs than a 45-minute rock opera stitched together out of surreal narration, bizarre tape effects, and musical passages both performed by Moore and Lovera and created by manipulating records and other found-sound sources. Although Moore's liner notes self-describe the results as "wild repulsive audio torture," the overall effect is actually quite pleasant in spots (as compared to some of the later practitioners of this kind of experimental noise) and shot through with both verbal and musical humor. The CD version adds a 12-minute promotional interview recorded by Ethos, Moore and Lovera's band of the period (with Moore's high-school buddies Roger Ferguson on vocals and Billy Anderson on keyboards), as well as about 20 minutes' worth of rehearsals and demos recorded by Ethos in 1973.
